SPAY AND NEUTER
At CHVA, we recommend the spaying and/or neutering of your pet. Breed considerations, growth and development risks, as well as intended use of your pet are important reasons to consider consultation with a veterinarian prior to admission for a spay and neuter procedure. CHVA veterinarians require a pre-surgical consultation prior to scheduling these procedures in order to better educate you, the owner, on what to expect during and after the procedure. Pre-anesthetic blood work is also required for the safe administration of an anesthesia protocol that is unique to your pet.
Neuter (Castration)
During a routine neuter (castration), a male patient is under general anesthesia. They will have an IV catheter in place, IV Fluid therapy, intubation, and appropriate pain management provided. They are fully monitored by a certified veterinary technician from the moment of induction to extubation and recovery. The area of the scrotum will be clipped and aseptically prepped for a sterile surgery site. The procedure consists of a small incision near the scrotum to exteriorize the testes. In dogs, sutures will be placed to ligate the testicular vasculature and to close the incision. In cats, the incisions are often left open. For some dogs and cats who have abdominally retained testicles (known as cryptorchidism), a modified procedure more like a female spay procedure will be performed. We administer post-surgical laser therapy to all routine surgical patients after their procedure to improve blood flow to the surgical site and speed up healing. Spay (Ovariohysterectomy) During a routine spay (ovariohysterectomy), a female patient is under general anesthesia. They will have an IV catheter in place, IV Fluid therapy, intubation, and appropriate pain management provided. They are fully monitored by a certified veterinary technician from the moment of induction to extubation and recovery. The area of the abdomen will be clipped and aseptically prepped for a sterile surgery site. The procedure involves an abdominal mid-line incision and ligation of both of the ovarian ligaments and the uterine stump with suture material. Both the ovaries and the uterus is removed from the abdomen. The abdomen is closed with generally 2-3 layers of suture material and often surgical glue. We administer post-surgical laser therapy to all routine surgical patients after their procedure to improve blood flow to the surgical site and speed up healing.
