Since the staff is running around like crazy right now I felt like I needed to make myself useful.  I know, I know.. I haven't been the most productive clinic cats, but I do know how to make them smile during this trying time! :)

Things to do for your fur baby on Valentine's Day!

  1. Make them a special dinner or treat!  This is definitely number one for a reason...It's MY favorite. Just please don't make the treat something toxic to us.
  2. Take them on a walk or set aside extra playing time!
  3. Give their beds and blankets a good cleaning.  All the towels and blankets here at CHVA are mine and they get cleaned VERY frequently.
  4. Check to see if they are up to date on all their medical needs.  Call us if you want us to check for you.
  5. Groom them! A good brushin' can be very therapeutic and make our fur look fabulous.
  6. Play a game.  Hide some treats or create an obstacle course!
  7. Do a photo shoot and show us off since we all know our fur babies are the cutest EVER.

Cold Weather Tips

1/17/2020

The weather is getting colder, and no matter your thoughts on the impending winter, there is one thing we can all agree on – keeping our four-legged family members safe and happy.  Remember if it is too cold for you outdoors, it is probably too cold for your pet. Keep them indoors as much as possible.

Cats often seek shelter in or around vehicles during the winter months. Make sure you bang the hood or honk the horn before starting up and driving off, giving the cat time to move.

Does your short-haired dog seemed bothered by the colder weather? Try a dog sweater or jacket to keep him warm during outdoor time.

Winter can be especially dangerous to cats.  A house-cat can slip outside and get lost and disorientated in the cold.  The best way to ensure your loved makes it home, is through proper identification.  Collars and tags can get removed or lost. The best permanent identification is microchipping.  Make sure you keep your pet’s microchip registry up to date to ensure the quickest reunion!

After any brisk winter walks, make sure to use a towel and clean your dog’s belly and feet, washing away and ice-melt products or other chemicals they may have come in contact with.  While you are at it, check for any wintery damage to their paws (cracks, sores and/or bleeding).  Give us a call with any concerns!

Just like in the summer, cats and dogs should never be left unattended in vehicles.  Cars cool down rapidly in cold weather, and can turn into refrigerators!

Tips to a Safe New Year's Eve with Your Pets

  • Exercise your pets vigorously during the day when festivities have yet to begin!
  • Give them their evening meal before the fireworks and parties begin.
  • The best place for your pets on a night filled with loud noises from fireworks and parties is indoors in a quiet place.
  • Let your pet hide if they want to. They are trying to find a quiet place to de-stress! If your dog is regularly kenneled this will be the safest and calmest place for them!
  • Distract your pet with their favorite toys and games, but don't reward any anxious behavior.
  • Leave the TV or radio on.
  • Make sure your pet has all it's ID tags on just in case. Get your pet microchipped if they are not already.
  • If your pet is extremely anxious during fireworks and/or company consider talking to Dr. Schneider about different medications to help. (Pacing, barking, panting, whining, overly excited, trembling, drooling)
  • Keep human treats including alcohol away from your pets!
